ChatGPT and Japanese Language Teachers – Making a Quiz

Hello everyone; this is Hinako, a Japanese language instructor. I don’t know when this article will be rejected, but for now, I would like to write about what ChatGPT can do for me when I make test questions.

Create a simple four-choice question.

Do you have a hard time making kanji questions, and it is taking you a long time to do so?

For example, please make a 4-choice question on reading kanji characters using all the kanji characters in the “GENKI” textbook, “TO-SEI-SEN-NAN-KITAGU-DE-RIGHT-LEFT-BRANCH-DEKAI-University-GOKOKU.” The following is an example of a question that can be written this way. Note that you will get some straightforward choices if you don’t do this. Like, you’ll obviously know the answer by now.

The point is to write “examples” as well.
Example: “Where is Sensei?” A:Sensei B:Sensei C:Sensei
By putting this in, you can make the question a bit tricky. After creating the quiz, you can copy and paste it into a Google form, and a simple examination is ready. Ask them to make long-form questions.

When creating long-answer questions, it is difficult to create sentences from scratch!
Have you ever wanted to develop a topic or reading comprehension question similar to the one in your textbook, if possible?

I don’t recommend asking ChatGPT to “write a story” from the beginning because the connection between paragraphs is strange. My method is as follows. I paste a long sentence question from a textbook. Then, I type, “Please write a similar sentence with a slight change in content. By the way, the following long sentence (letter to the teacher) is original, so if you want to use it, you can copy it from here and use it freely.

Then the content will be a bit different. Suddenly, you are baptized by an AI that says, “Happy Birthday,” but we do not recommend using ChatGPT as it is. It is necessary to brush up to completion with human eyes.

Listing of unlearned single words in long-text questions.

This sentence contains some tricky words, doesn’t it?

I would like to create a list of new words; below the text. For example, if you have a list of N3-level words and they are a bit difficult, you can stick them under the text. It’s a long list, so please be selective, depending on the class level. Also, sometimes there are no English translations, so in that case, I think it would be good to write an additional note asking for an English translation to be attached as well.

Pronounce difficult words

Like the words, there is a lot of kanji I can’t read – I might want to give you a hint.

When I ask ChatGPT to “Please put furigana on this sentence,” I get something written entirely in hiragana. Oh no, it’s hard to read! So, we ask, “Please write the readings of the kanji characters in the following sentences in bullet points as shown in the example. Example: If you write “Genki (Genki)”, you will get a list.

Ask them to create a correct or incorrect question.

So far the text is ready, but the key problem is. This is also very difficult to make. It is very difficult to catch a question with an erratum. In such a case, you can ask them to make four correct/incorrect questions. If you don’t give a specific number of questions, you may get all of them correct. This can also be very strange, so check before you make it.

Sample Quiz

This is just a simple creation, and I need to think a little more about it, but I think it would shorten the time to create a test if I ask ChatGPT rather than creating something of this form from scratch.

Extra (Ctrl+Shift+V to paste from ChatGPT)

If I copy and paste the text from ChatGPT into something else, do I get the gray background?

In such a case, Ctrl+Shift+V for Windows or Command+Shift+V for Mac will be helpful to paste only the text with the background gray removed! Thank you, KENT.

As I have said many times, it is only an AI and the teacher should check it with his/her own eyes! Please remember this. But I think it is possible to get the hang of it and ask ChatGPT to do it for you, as it is far shorter than making it from scratch. Thank you for reading.I will write about the grading section in the next issue. Please look forward to it!

Thank you for reading.
